Class

Vehicle types are specified according to the standard used in tramway books published by Blickpunkt Strassenbahn, as specified below.
  • 2x = 2-axled vehicle (the number refers to the number of axles)
  • 4x = 4-axled vehicle
  • ZR = double-ended vehicle (Zweirichtung)
  • ER = single-ended vehicle (Einrichtungswagen)
  • Gel = articulated vehicle (Gelenkwagen)
  • NfV = 100% low-floor vehicle (Niederflur)
  • NfT = partially low-floor vehicle
  • NfM = center low-floor vehicle

Doors

The doors are specified like this: 0-000-0. These figures mean: number of doors in front of the front axle, number of doors just behind the front axle, number of doors in the center of the carriage, number of doors just in front of the rear axle, and number of doors behind the rear axle. The dashes thus refer to the wheel axles (boggies). The front axle of a double-ended vehicle is thus the axle nearest the A end of the vehicle. A "V" in front of a group of figures refers to doors on the left-hand side, while "H" refers to doors on the right-hand side.

The museum vehicles are divided into four operating classes (applies only to vehicles owned by the Swedish Tramway Society):
• Class I: Ready for operating use.
• Class II: Ready for operating use, but in need of minor repairs.
• Class IIB: Ready for operating use after minor repairs.
• Class III: Requires major repairs to become ready for operating use.
• Class IV: Requires a complete overhaul to become ready for operating use.

Preservation category

Rail vehicles have been classified by preservation status. The statuses are 1, 2 and 3, where 1 and 2 are heritage (museum) vehicles deserving of preservation (applies only to vehicles owned by the Swedish Tramway Society).
Class 1 includes 14 vehicles representing the historically important stages in the evolution of Swedish tramways. This portion of the vehicle fleet should be maintained at the national museum, i.e. at Malmköping, and should not be lent or stationed at other tramways or museums for long periods. However, short-term loans, such as those in connection with anniversaries or openings, should be allowed.
Class 2 includes vehicles representing other stages in tramway evolution. At the national museum, these vehicles, along with those in Class 1, should be used to exhibit: historically authentic tram trains; as many manufacturers as possible; a condensed version of the vehicle development in each city .
Class 3 includes other rail vehicles in the collections. This group includes duplicates of the vehicles in classes 1 and 2, i.e. "parts vehicles", as well as vehicles used for particular types of service, etc. This group also includes repair cars, work trailers and similar vehicles needed in the operation of the national museum.

The road vehicles are categorized into the following classes for museal service:
Class 1 Vehicles that are representative for the history of Swedish buses regarding technics and design and will be preserved for the future.
Class 2 Vehicles that are of local interest for preservation.
Class 3 Vehicles that are in regular service within MUMA/SSS
Class 4 Vehicles that have duplicates and in the long term should be taken off.
Class 4a Vehicle is removed from museal service due to duplicates, but are preserved as a playground.
