The newest chapter
The Sundsvall chapter of the Swedish Tramway Society is the newest chapter. It was founded in 1980, and it is also the northernmost chapter.
Tram no. 2
One of the new chapter's first tasks was to take care of the remains of motorised tram no. 2 that had belonged to Sundsvalls Spårvägs AB (Sundsvall Tramways Limited). The tram was found in the Östrand industrial district north of Sundsvall, where it had been used as a site hut after the tramways were abandoned. Since it had been believed that all trams from Sundsvall were gone, the question was immediately raised whether there were other remaining trams, as yet undiscovered.
Visual meetings
The Sundsvall chapter has a regular program, with normally two meetings, in the spring and autumn. At the meetings we view slides and films, and discuss buses and tramcars. We sometimes organise excursions.
Tramway traffic
Tramway service Sundsvall had trams from 1911 to 1952. There were two lines, one in the city between Ortviken and Kubikenborg, abandoned in 1949, and a suburban line between central Sundsvall and Skönvik. This line was abandoned in 1952, and the trams were sold to LKAB in Kiruna, where they ran until 1961, at which time they were unfortunately scrapped. These trams were the largest in Scandinavia in their time.
